The graphite belt beneath Coosa County could one-day power America cars
Graphite, an important mineral in the green economy that weighs as much as 200 pounds of a Tesla, is currently undeveloped, just a stone\'s throw from Route 29 in Coosa County.
This site is one of two graphite deposits currently being developed for commercial use in the United States. In rugged terrain 40 miles north of Nome, Alaska, the other is just northwest of Rockford. Westwater Resources, based in Colorado, has exclusive mining rights to 42,000 acres, known as The Coosa Project.
Although Westwater does not expect the mine to be operational for another six years, the mining company announced earlier this year that it would finalize a site for the processing plant. Processing plants will turn raw materials into products suitable for batteries, including those used in electric vehicles.
Christopher Jones, Westwater\'s chief executive, said decisions on five sites in Alabama and two in Colorado would be made within the next three months.
